The Red Striped Alenquer Pleco is a heavily armoured catfish with the broad head, strong body plates and impressive odontodes characteristic of Pseudacanthicus. Its dark base colour is marked by vivid reddish to orange striping or spotting, although the pattern can vary considerably between individual fish and collection forms.

This is a powerful, nocturnal and highly territorial pleco rather than a peaceful algae grazer. It spends much of the day concealed in a cave or beneath cover, becoming more active after dark when it explores the bottom and searches for food.

In nature, these fish inhabit warm Amazonian waterways with rocky or woody structure, shaded areas and strong local currents. Their flattened bodies and gripping mouths are well suited to holding position among submerged surfaces and navigating turbulent river margins.

The Red Striped Alenquer Pleco is prized by specialist aquarists for its bold colouration and unusual appearance. It grows into a substantial, muscular fish, and its territorial behaviour becomes increasingly pronounced as it matures, particularly around caves and other preferred resting places.

The Red Striped Alenquer Pleco is an undescribed Pseudacanthicus from the Alenquer region of Pará, in the Brazilian Amazon. Its exact collection locality and scientific identity are not consistently documented in the aquarium trade, but it is associated with warm, riverine habitats in northern South America.

A single adult needs at least 400 litres, with a footprint of roughly 150 × 60 cm; larger dimensions are preferable because floor area matters more than height. Provide powerful filtration, excellent oxygenation and good water movement, together with sturdy caves, rockwork and substantial bogwood arranged to create separate territories. Use smooth sand or fine rounded gravel that will not abrade the underside, and secure heavy decor firmly because this large fish can shift objects while excavating or claiming shelter.

Up to about 35 cm (14 in) in total length; males may become slightly larger and more heavily built than females.

This omnivorous but strongly carnivorous pleco should receive a varied diet of high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, wafers, prawns, mussel, earthworms and other suitable meaty foods. Occasional vegetables such as courgette or shelled peas can add variety, but plant matter should not replace the substantial protein this species needs. Feed after dark or shortly before lights out so food reaches the fish before more active tankmates consume it.

Suitable companions include robust, similarly sized South American fish such as large tetras, peaceful to moderately assertive cichlids, silver dollars, larger rasboras and other sizeable community species that occupy different areas of the aquarium. Avoid delicate, very small or slow-moving fish that may be stressed by its activity at night, along with other Pseudacanthicus, similarly territorial plecos and competing cave-dwelling bottom fish unless the aquarium is exceptionally large and carefully structured.

Breeding Red Striped Alenquer Plecos is uncommon in home aquariums and requires a mature, spacious aquarium with several caves large enough for the fish to enter. A compatible pair may spawn inside a secluded cave after conditioning with a varied, protein-rich diet and changes to clean, well-oxygenated water. The male typically guards and fans the eggs until they hatch, while the fry remain close to the cave before accepting finely crushed sinking foods and other small meaty foods.

Mature males are generally larger and develop more prominent odontodes, bristles and cheek or body spines, particularly during breeding condition. Females are usually broader through the abdomen and have a smoother head and body profile, although sexing young fish is difficult.
