What are Saulosi cichlids like?

The Saulosi cichlid is a small, vividly coloured mbuna from Lake Malawi. Mature males are typically deep blue with darker vertical barring, while females are bright yellow, making this species one of the few mbuna in which the sexes can look strikingly different rather than sharing a similar colour pattern.

These fish are active, confident rock-dwellers that spend much of their time weaving between crevices and grazing across hard surfaces. Males defend territories, and their behaviour can be energetic and assertive, especially when competing for access to females or preferred spawning sites.

In the wild, Saulosi cichlids inhabit the rocky littoral zone, where algae-covered stones provide both feeding surfaces and shelter. Their compact body and pointed fins are well suited to moving through narrow gaps in the reef.

The species was once widely known as Pseudotropheus saulosi, but it is now generally placed in the genus Chindongo. Its vivid sexual dimorphism and relatively modest adult size have made it a popular choice for aquarists interested in Malawi mbuna communities.

Where do Saulosi cichlids originate?

Chindongo saulosi is endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. It is particularly associated with the rocky reefs around Taiwan Reef, near the lake’s central-western coast, where it lives among the exposed rockwork of the Malawi Rift Valley.

What water temperature suits Saulosi cichlids?

Celsius: 2428 °C
Fahrenheit: 7582 °F

Which pH range is best for Saulosi cichlids?

Ideal pH: 7.68.6

How many Saulosi cichlids should live together?

Keep at least 6 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

How should a Saulosi cichlid aquarium be arranged?

A group should be given at least 200 litres, with a larger aquarium preferable for multiple males or a mixed mbuna community. Aim for dimensions of roughly 120 cm long by 40 cm wide or more, since floor area is important for territories. Use a stable arrangement of limestone or other aquarium-safe rocks to create caves, visual barriers and escape routes, while leaving open swimming space. A sand or fine-gravel substrate suits their natural rocky habitat, and strong filtration with good oxygenation is important in the alkaline, active aquarium they require.

How large do Saulosi cichlids become?

Males reach about 8 cm (3.1 inches), while females are usually smaller at around 6 cm (2.4 inches).

What should Saulosi cichlids eat?

This species is primarily an herbivorous grazer that scrapes algae and associated microorganisms from rocks. Offer a varied, predominantly vegetable-based diet built around quality spirulina or algae-rich flakes and pellets, supplemented with blanched spinach, courgette or other suitable vegetables. Small amounts of brine shrimp or similar foods can be used occasionally, but rich animal-based diets should not form the staple because they may contribute to digestive problems in mbuna.

Which tankmates work well with Saulosi cichlids?

Saulosi cichlids are best kept with other robust Lake Malawi mbuna of comparable size and temperament, such as yellow labs, rusty cichlids, acei and selected Iodotropheus species. A suitably spacious aquarium with abundant rockwork helps distribute territorial behaviour. Avoid peaceful community fish, slow-moving species and delicate tankmates. Do not combine them with similarly patterned blue-and-yellow mbuna, as aggression and hybridisation can result; keeping only one closely related colour form is also advisable.

How can you breed Saulosi cichlids successfully?

Chindongo saulosi are maternal mouthbrooders and will usually breed readily in a mature aquarium. Keep one male with several females to spread courtship pressure. The male displays around a suitable rock or flat surface, where the female lays eggs and picks them up into her mouth after fertilisation. She incubates the eggs for around three weeks, during which time she may hide and eat very little. Once released, the fry can be raised on finely crushed flake, baby brine shrimp and other appropriately sized foods, although dense rockwork provides valuable refuge from adults.

How can male and female Saulosi cichlids be distinguished?

Saulosi cichlids show pronounced sexual dimorphism. Males are generally blue with dark vertical bars and may display blue or blackish fins, whereas females are usually yellow overall, sometimes with faint barring. Males also tend to be larger and more robust than females.
