Peppermint Bristlenose Catfish L183 have the classic flattened body and underslung sucker mouth associated with bristlenose catfish. Their dark brown to black base colour is scattered with pale cream or yellowish spots, creating the peppered appearance that gives this fish its popular name. The fins are patterned with contrasting markings, and adults develop a broad, armoured profile.

Like other loricariid catfish, this species is covered in protective bony plates rather than ordinary scales. It spends much of its time attached to wood, rock or glass, rasping across surfaces with its specialised mouth. Activity often increases after dusk, although well-established individuals may emerge during the day, particularly when food is available.

In the wild, L183 inhabits complex river environments where submerged branches, roots and stones provide shelter. The Rio Negro's naturally dark water is often low in mineral content and rich in dissolved organic compounds, while seasonal changes in water level alter the available feeding and breeding sites.

Peppermint Bristlenose Catfish are generally peaceful towards other species, but mature males can be territorial around favoured caves. Their quiet, useful algae-grazing behaviour and unusual facial bristles make them a striking choice for a suitably spacious South American community aquarium.

Ancistrus dolichopterus is native to the Rio Negro basin in Amazonas, northern Brazil, South America. It is associated with dark, tannin-stained tributaries and rocky or woody habitats with flowing, well-oxygenated water.

A single Peppermint Bristlenose Catfish should be kept in an aquarium of at least 120 litres, with a footprint of roughly 90 by 45 cm; a larger tank is advisable for a group or community containing several bottom-dwellers. Use efficient filtration and good circulation while leaving calm resting areas. Provide smooth driftwood, rounded rocks, caves and shaded retreats, with hardy plants attached to the decor where possible. A sand or fine, smooth-grained substrate is suitable and helps prevent damage to the underside, while open areas should remain available for feeding and swimming.

Up to about 15 cm (6 inches) in total length. Males commonly reach the larger end of the range, while females are often slightly shorter and broader-bodied.

This species is an omnivorous grazer with a strong preference for vegetable matter and aufwuchs. Offer sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based foods and blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach or green beans, alongside occasional high-quality catfish pellets and protein-rich foods such as frozen bloodworm or brine shrimp. Driftwood should be available as part of the aquarium environment because grazing wood-associated biofilm and fibres is beneficial. Feed after lights-out or ensure that food reaches the bottom before faster tankmates consume it.

Peppermint Bristlenose Catfish are peaceful community fish and can share an aquarium with similarly peaceful tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, peaceful dwarf cichlids, Corydoras and other non-aggressive South American species. They are also compatible with many peaceful livebearers and small rainbowfish when water conditions suit all inhabitants. Avoid large predatory fish, fin-nippers and boisterous species that may outcompete them for food. Multiple males may quarrel over caves, so each male should have separate territories and hiding places.

Peppermint Bristlenose Catfish are cave-spawning suckermouth catfish. Provide a snug cave or ceramic tube with a single entrance, then condition the adults with plentiful vegetable foods and meaty supplements. The male usually chooses and cleans the cave, while the female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs inside. He guards and fans them until they hatch, with the fry becoming free-swimming after absorbing their yolk sacs. Feed the young soft algae wafers, blanched vegetables and finely powdered fry food.

Mature males develop prominent branched bristles across the snout and forehead, often extending well up the head. Females usually have few, much shorter bristles restricted to the edge of the snout and tend to be rounder through the abdomen.
