Orinoco Angel Pleco L201 Care Guide - Setup, Diet & Breeding

Orinoco Angel Pleco L201 is a striking small loricariid catfish with a broad, flattened body, large fins and a boldly patterned black-and-white appearance. Its pale base colour is marked by dark bands and irregular patches, while the tall dorsal fin and strongly patterned fins give it a particularly elegant profile. The exact pattern varies between individuals and locality forms, which adds to its appeal among specialist pleco keepers.

Like other Hypancistrus, this pleco spends much of its time attached to rockwork, wood and the aquarium glass. It is generally peaceful toward unrelated fish, although it may defend a preferred cave or feeding area from other bottom-dwelling catfish. It is most active at dusk and during the night, though healthy specimens often appear during daylight once they become accustomed to their surroundings.

In the wild, L201 inhabits flowing sections of the Orinoco system with rocky substrates, submerged timber and numerous cracks and cavities. Its sucker-shaped mouth allows it to hold position in current, while its flattened form helps it shelter beneath rocks and in narrow spaces. The species is adapted to warm, highly oxygenated tropical water rather than stagnant conditions.

The L201 designation is a trade code used for an undescribed or incompletely resolved Hypancistrus form. It is commonly sold as the Orinoco Angel Pleco, a name that reflects both its river-basin origin and its attractive high-contrast pattern. Its manageable adult size makes it a popular alternative to much larger pleco species.

Orinoco Angel Pleco L201 originates from the upper Orinoco drainage of South America, particularly clear, fast-flowing tributaries in the Colombian and Venezuelan region. It is associated with rocky stream habitats where submerged surfaces and crevices provide shelter.

A single Orinoco Angel Pleco L201 should be given at least 120 litres, with a footprint of around 90 × 40 cm or larger; a longer aquarium is preferable to a tall one. Provide strong biological filtration, excellent oxygenation and a gentle-to-moderate current, together with regular maintenance to keep nitrate low. Use smooth sand or fine gravel, rounded rocks, driftwood and several tight caves or slate shelters. Plants are optional, although hardy species can be used around the edges while the central floor space remains open for feeding and territorial activity. The ideal water temperature is 26–30°C, with a pH of approximately 5.5–7.5.

Up to around 12–14 cm (4.7–5.5 in) in total length. Males are often slightly larger and more robust than females, although individual size varies.

This is primarily a carnivorous and insectivorous pleco rather than a dedicated algae eater. Offer a varied diet of high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, catfish tablets, frozen or live bloodworm, brine shrimp, mysis and other small aquatic invertebrates. Occasional vegetables such as courgette or shelled peas may be accepted, but meaty foods should form the nutritional foundation. Feed after the aquarium lights dim so the pleco can eat without competing with faster midwater fish.

Orinoco Angel Pleco L201 can share an aquarium with peaceful South American tetras, pencilfish, rasboras, peaceful barbs, small Corydoras and other calm community fish that appreciate warm water. It may also live with appropriately sized peaceful cichlids, provided there are plenty of caves and no persistent competition for the bottom. Avoid aggressive cichlids, boisterous feeders and large predatory fish. Keeping several plecos requires ample territory, and similarly shaped or cave-dwelling loricariids may provoke disputes, especially between mature males.

Orinoco Angel Pleco L201 is a cave-spawning species that can be bred in a mature aquarium with clean, warm, well-oxygenated water and suitable breeding caves. A bonded pair usually chooses a snug ceramic or slate cave, where the male guards the eggs and fans them with his fins. The fry remain in the cave until their yolk sacs are absorbed, after which they can be offered finely crushed sinking foods, algae-based foods and small meaty foods. Stable water quality and regular, modest water changes are important for encouraging spawning.

Mature males usually develop broader heads and more pronounced odontodes or bristle-like growths along the cheeks, pectoral-fin spines and sides of the body. Females are generally rounder through the abdomen and tend to have a narrower head with fewer visible odontodes.
