Maleri Island Sunshine OB Peacock is a striking Lake Malawi cichlid known for its vivid orange-blotched, or OB, pattern. Mature males often develop an intense blue sheen across the face and body, contrasted with yellow, orange and irregular dark markings. Individual patterns vary considerably, which gives each fish a distinctive appearance.

Like other peacock cichlids, it is an active but generally less combative member of the Malawi cichlid community. Males display to females and rivals with extended fins and intensified colour, while females are typically more subtly marked and spend much of their time searching the substrate for food.

In the wild, Aulonocara peacocks use specialised sensory pores in the lower jaw to detect small prey hidden in sandy lake sediments. They hover above the bottom, then locate and sift through the substrate for invertebrates and other tiny organisms.

The Maleri Island Sunshine OB is primarily encountered in the aquarium trade as a selectively bred colour variety. Its combination of metallic blue, warm orange blotches and peaceful-for-a-Malawi-cichlid temperament makes it a popular choice for carefully planned African cichlid displays.

This aquarium form is associated with the Maleri Islands in Lake Malawi, East Africa. The “Sunshine OB” designation refers to a selectively maintained orange-blotched colour form of an Aulonocara peacock rather than a formally described species.

A group should be housed in an aquarium of at least 240 litres, with a footprint around 120 x 45 cm or larger; a longer tank is preferable for a male with several females. Use fine sand or another smooth substrate so the fish can sift naturally, and arrange rounded rocks into caves and broken sightlines while leaving open swimming space. Strong biological filtration, good oxygenation and stable, alkaline water are essential. A temperature of 24–28°C and a pH of approximately 7.6–8.6 suit this Lake Malawi species.

Males can reach about 15 cm (6 in) in length, while females are usually smaller at around 10–12 cm (4–4.7 in).

Feed a quality cichlid pellet or granule formulated for African herbivore-leaning or omnivorous Malawi cichlids, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp and daphnia. Small, regular meals suit their natural foraging behaviour. Avoid making meaty mammalian foods or excessive fatty food a staple, as these can contribute to digestive problems.

Suitable companions include other relatively peaceful Aulonocara varieties and calm Lake Malawi haps of a similar size and temperament. Avoid mixing it with highly aggressive mbuna, delicate community fish, fin-nippers and species that are small enough to be swallowed. Keeping multiple males can lead to persistent territorial conflict, particularly in a smaller aquarium, and closely related peacock varieties may hybridise if they breed together.

Maleri Island Sunshine OB Peacocks are maternal mouthbrooders. Use one mature male with several females, and condition them with a varied, protein-rich diet. The male displays around a chosen area and the female collects fertilised eggs in her mouth, where she incubates them for around three weeks. She may be moved to a separate aquarium shortly before releasing the fry, which can be fed newly hatched brine shrimp and finely crushed food. Avoid stripping or disturbing the female unless experienced, as this can cause stress and egg loss.

Males are larger and develop much brighter metallic blue, yellow or orange colouration, often with elongated fins and stronger pattern contrast. Females are generally smaller and less vividly coloured, commonly showing a brownish, grey or orange-blotched pattern without the male’s intense blue sheen.
