What are Malawi Trout like?

Malawi Trout are large, streamlined haplochromine cichlids with a powerful, torpedo-shaped body built for fast pursuit. Mature males develop an intense blue to blue-green sheen, often contrasted by yellowish markings on the dorsal and caudal fins. Females and juveniles are generally silvery or grey, with more subdued patterning.

This species is an active open-water predator rather than a rock-dwelling mbuna. Its pointed head, large mouth and strong swimming ability reflect a hunting style based on speed and sudden acceleration, and it can cover considerable distances while searching for prey.

In Lake Malawi, Malawi Trout inhabit open water and offshore areas, including zones around rocky shores and drop-offs. They are often associated with the upper and middle water layers, where their long, streamlined form allows them to chase smaller fish.

Despite their attractive adult colours, Malawi Trout are demanding aquarium subjects because they become very large and require exceptional swimming space. They can be assertive predators, but well-kept adults are impressive, active centrepieces for a suitably spacious Lake Malawi community.

Where do Malawi Trout originate?

Malawi Trout are endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa, where they occur in open, relatively deep lake habitats. Their range includes the waters of Malawi and adjoining parts of Mozambique and Tanzania within the Lake Malawi basin.

What water temperature suits Malawi Trout best?

Celsius: 2428 °C
Fahrenheit: 7582 °F

Which pH range keeps Malawi Trout thriving?

Ideal pH: 7.58.5

How many Malawi Trout should be kept together?

Keep at least 4 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

What aquarium setup do Malawi Trout require?

An adult group requires at least 700 litres, with a footprint of about 200 x 60 cm or larger; a longer and wider aquarium is preferable to a tall one because this is an active open-water swimmer. Use a fine sand or smooth-gravel substrate, sturdy rockwork arranged around the edges, and broad unobstructed areas through the centre and upper water column. Rocks must be stable enough not to topple when the fish move around them, and powerful filtration with strong oxygenation is essential. A tight-fitting cover is recommended because large cichlids can jump.

How large can Malawi Trout become?

Males can reach about 40 cm (15.7 inches), while females are usually smaller at around 30 cm (11.8 inches).

What should Malawi Trout eat?

Malawi Trout are primarily piscivorous and should receive a varied carnivorous diet based on high-quality sinking or floating cichlid pellets, supplemented with suitably sized frozen foods such as fish, prawns, krill and mysis. Whole small fish can be offered occasionally to large specimens, but feeder fish should not be used routinely because of parasite and nutritional risks. Feed modest portions rather than allowing this fast-growing predator to become overweight.

Which fish make good tankmates for Malawi Trout?

Suitable companions include other large, robust Lake Malawi cichlids with similar water requirements, such as large Copadichromis, Placidochromis, Protomelas and selected larger Haplochromini. Tankmates must be substantial enough not to be swallowed and should have plenty of room to avoid harassment. Avoid mbuna or other small cichlids, peaceful community fish, long-finned species and any fish small enough to fit in the Malawi Trout's mouth. Do not combine them with highly aggressive species in a cramped aquarium.

How can Malawi Trout be bred successfully?

Malawi Trout are maternal mouthbrooders. In a suitable group, a mature male courts a female over a flat area or open substrate, where she collects the fertilised eggs in her mouth. The female incubates the eggs and fry for roughly three to four weeks, usually hiding during this period. She may release the young among rocks or plants, and the fry can be raised on newly hatched brine shrimp and other appropriately sized foods. Because adults readily eat small fish, provide a separate nursery or remove the fry if a high survival rate is wanted.

How can male and female Malawi Trout be distinguished?

Males grow larger and develop vivid blue or blue-green adult colouration, often with yellowish highlights in the fins. Females remain smaller and are mainly silver-grey, while juveniles of both sexes are comparatively plain.
