Leopard Frog Plec L134 Care Guide - Aquarium Setup, Diet & Breeding
What makes Leopard Frog Plecs distinctive?
The Leopard Frog Plec is a striking loricariid catfish decorated with bold dark bands and blotches over a pale golden, cream or yellow-brown body. Its compact, robust shape and sucker-shaped mouth give it the classic appearance of a pleco, while its relatively modest adult size makes it more manageable than many larger members of the group.
This species is mainly nocturnal and spends much of the day resting beneath wood, inside caves or among rocky shelters. It is generally peaceful toward fish that occupy the middle and upper levels of the aquarium, although individuals can become territorial with similar-looking catfish when hiding places are limited.
In the wild, Leopard Frog Plecs live among submerged rocks, branches and crevices in flowing water. Their flattened body and strong fins help them cling to surfaces, and their patterned colouring breaks up their outline against the dappled shadows of the riverbed.
Peckoltia compta was formerly widely traded under the L134 code, a number that remains central to its aquarium identity. It is valued for its attractive markings, useful algae-grazing behaviour and engaging habit of appearing after the aquarium lights go out.
Where do Leopard Frog Plecs originate?
Peckoltia compta is native to the Rio Tapajós basin in Brazil, South America. It occurs in warm, clear to lightly tea-coloured tributaries and rocky river habitats with strong flow, submerged wood and plenty of crevices.

Do Leopard Frog Plecs need company?
Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.
How should a Leopard Frog Plec aquarium be set up?
A single Leopard Frog Plec should have an aquarium of at least 120 litres, with a footprint of roughly 120 cm by 40 cm; a larger tank is preferable for multiple fish or a community containing other bottom dwellers. Use efficient filtration and good oxygenation, with moderate water movement that reflects its river origins. Provide smooth rocks, substantial driftwood and several caves or narrow shelters, including separate retreats if more than one pleco is kept. A fine sand or smooth-gravel substrate is suitable, and subdued lighting with shaded areas helps the fish feel secure.
How large do Leopard Frog Plecs become?
Up to about 15 cm (6 in) in total length. Males are often slightly larger and more heavily built than females, although individual size varies.
What should Leopard Frog Plecs be fed?
Although they graze on biofilm and aufwuchs, Leopard Frog Plecs need more than algae alone. Offer high-quality sinking tablets or wafers containing vegetable matter, supplemented with blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach or shelled peas. They also benefit from occasional meaty foods such as frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp or insect-based sinking pellets, particularly when being conditioned for breeding. Feed after dark or shortly before lights out so food reaches this nocturnal species.
Which fish make good tankmates for Leopard Frog Plecs?
Leopard Frog Plecs are peaceful community fish and can live with small to medium-sized tetras, rasboras, peaceful barbs, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids, gouramis and other calm South American species. They are also suitable with peaceful bottom dwellers when the aquarium offers plenty of separate shelters. Avoid housing them with aggressive cichlids, boisterous fish or several territorial plecos in a confined space, as competition for caves and feeding areas can lead to conflict.
How can Leopard Frog Plecs be bred in the aquarium?
Leopard Frog Plecs are cave-spawning catfish that can be bred in a mature aquarium by providing several snug ceramic or slate caves, excellent water quality and a varied diet. The male selects and guards a cave while the female deposits a cluster of eggs, which he fertilises and protects. The eggs usually hatch in around a week, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days later. Feed the young fish soft vegetables, algae-based foods and suitably sized sinking foods once their yolk sacs have been absorbed.
How can male and female Leopard Frog Plecs be distinguished?
Mature males usually develop more conspicuous bristles and odontodes on the cheeks, pectoral-fin spines and sides of the body. Females tend to have a broader, rounder abdomen when viewed from above and usually show fewer or less-developed odontodes.
