The L455 Tiger Rubber Lip Pleco is a striking small-to-medium suckermouth catfish with a broad, flattened body and a distinctive rubbery-looking lower lip. Its base colour ranges from olive-brown to grey-brown, overlaid with darker tiger-like bands and mottling that help it blend into shaded rocks and leaf-strewn streambeds. The tall dorsal fin and sturdy pectoral fins give it the classic Chaetostoma silhouette.

This is a primarily nocturnal and crepuscular species, although settled individuals often become visible during the day, especially when grazing. It uses its specialised mouth to cling firmly to rocks and wood in fast-moving water, scraping algae and other organic growth from the surface. Adults are generally peaceful, but they may defend a preferred cave or feeding area from other bottom-dwelling catfish.

In the wild, Tiger Rubber Lip Plecos inhabit clear, well-oxygenated streams and tributaries rather than sluggish waters. Their flattened shape, powerful fins and wide mouth are adaptations for life among current-washed stones, where biofilm and algae provide a steady source of food.

The L455 is appreciated for its attractive pattern, useful algae-grazing habits and more manageable adult size than many large plecos. It is best regarded as a specialist riverine catfish rather than a conventional community scavenger, since it needs regular access to suitable vegetable foods and well-oxygenated water.

Chaetostoma formosae is native to Colombia in the Río Magdalena drainage of northern South America. It comes from flowing tributaries and foothill streams with rocky bottoms, strong current and abundant algae-covered surfaces.

Allow at least 120 litres for one adult, with a footprint of approximately 90 × 40 cm or larger; a longer aquarium is preferable to a tall, narrow one. Use efficient filtration, vigorous circulation and excellent oxygenation to recreate a clean, flowing stream environment. Provide smooth rocks, rounded gravel or fine sand, sturdy driftwood and several caves or crevices, while leaving open surfaces for grazing. Avoid sharp decorations that could damage the mouth and barbels, and secure heavy rocks firmly because these active fish may move around the substrate.

Males can reach about 15 cm (6 inches) in total length, while females are usually slightly smaller at around 13 cm (5.1 inches).

Tiger Rubber Lip Plecos are mainly herbivorous grazers that feed on algae, aufwuchs and biofilm in nature. Offer sinking algae wafers and regular portions of blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach, kale or green beans, supplemented with driftwood for grazing. Occasional high-quality sinking foods containing some animal protein can be used, particularly for young fish or conditioning adults, but meaty foods should not dominate the diet. Feed after lights out or near dusk so the pleco can eat without competition.

Tiger Rubber Lip Plecos are peaceful with similarly sized, non-aggressive community fish. Suitable companions include peaceful tetras, rasboras, danios, livebearers, small barbs, peaceful dwarf cichlids and other calm fish that occupy the middle and upper levels. They can also be kept with suitable peaceful loaches and Corydoras, provided there are enough caves and feeding areas. Avoid large aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping species and highly boisterous competitors, and use caution when keeping multiple male plecos in a smaller aquarium because they may become territorial.

Tiger Rubber Lip Plecos are cave-spawning catfish. Provide a snug cave with a single entrance, strong oxygenation and clean, well-filtered water. The male usually claims the cave, attracts a female inside and guards the adhesive egg cluster until the fry hatch. Once free-swimming, the young can be offered soft algae-based foods and finely crushed vegetable foods.

Mature males generally develop a broader head and more pronounced odontodes or bristle-like growth on the cheeks and pectoral-fin spines. Females tend to have a rounder abdomen, a somewhat narrower head and fewer visible odontodes.
