Half Black White Guppy Care Guide - Setup, Feeding & Breeding

Half Black White Guppies are a striking fancy strain recognised for the contrast between a dark, often black rear half and a pale white or silvery front half. Selective breeding can produce considerable variation in the exact boundary, tail shape and pattern intensity, with some fish displaying broad delta tails and others carrying more compact or flowing fins.

Males are small, colourful and constantly active, often displaying their patterned bodies and fins during courtship. Females are larger and less vividly marked, but their rounded bodies and subtle half-black pattern still make them attractive community fish.

Like other guppies, this strain is lively, social and generally peaceful. They spend much of their time in the middle and upper areas of the aquarium, investigating their surroundings and interacting with one another without usually troubling other fish.

The species is naturally associated with warm, slow-moving freshwater habitats such as streams, drainage ditches, ponds and the margins of rivers. Wild guppies are highly adaptable, while the Half Black White form is maintained through selective breeding in the aquarium trade.

The Half Black White Guppy is a cultivated fancy strain of Poecilia reticulata rather than a naturally occurring wild population. Its wild ancestors originate in northern South America and nearby islands, including Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Trinidad and Barbados.

A group of Half Black White Guppies should have at least a 60-litre aquarium, with a practical footprint of around 60 × 30 cm or larger. Use gentle to moderate filtration, open swimming space and a secure lid, as guppies can jump. Fine gravel or sand works well over a planted layout, with hardy live plants, floating cover and some open areas for displaying and swimming. Dense vegetation is especially helpful if fry are to be raised in the main aquarium.

Males usually reach about 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 in), while females can grow to around 5–6 cm (2.0–2.4 in). Females are therefore noticeably larger and heavier-bodied than males.

Offer a varied omnivorous diet based on high-quality tropical flakes or small granules, supplemented with foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae and finely chopped frozen foods. Spirulina or other algae-based foods can provide useful plant matter. Feed small portions once or twice daily, only as much as the fish consume promptly, and provide appropriately tiny foods for fry.

Half Black White Guppies are peaceful community fish and can be kept with similarly calm species such as platies, mollies, swordtails, peaceful tetras, rasboras, small danios, Corydoras and peaceful dwarf plecos. Avoid fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs, aggressive or predatory fish, and tankmates large enough to eat them. Long-finned males may be harassed by persistent nippers, and keeping both sexes together will result in frequent breeding unless only one sex is selected.

Half Black White Guppies are prolific livebearers and will usually breed readily in a mature aquarium. Keep several females for each male to reduce persistent courtship, and provide dense plants or floating cover where fry can hide. After mating, a female may give birth to around 20–60 free-swimming fry after roughly 21–30 days, although litter size depends on her age and size. Adults may eat the young, so separate the fry or use a heavily planted nursery area and feed them appropriately sized foods such as powdered fry food, baby brine shrimp and finely crushed flakes.

Males are smaller and more colourful, with enlarged patterned caudal and dorsal fins and a modified anal fin called a gonopodium. Females are larger, plainer and rounder in the abdomen, often showing a dark gravid spot near the rear of the body when carrying developing young.
