Half Black Ultra Rose Guppy Care Guide - Setup, Diet & Breeding

Half Black Ultra Rose Guppies are a selectively bred colour variety of the common guppy, prized for the striking contrast between a dark half-black rear body and a broad rose-toned tail. The exact shade can range from soft pink to rich red-rose, and show-quality males may also display metallic highlights and an elaborately shaped caudal fin.

As with other fancy guppies, males are smaller and more vividly patterned than females. Their flowing fins and active, constantly exploring behaviour make them eye-catching residents of a planted community aquarium, while females tend to have a fuller, less ornate appearance.

The species is naturally associated with shallow, slow-moving waters such as streams, ditches, pools and the margins of rivers. Wild guppies often live among aquatic vegetation, where they forage for tiny invertebrates, algae and other edible particles while using cover to avoid predators.

Poecilia reticulata has been established in many tropical and subtropical regions through human introduction, but the Half Black Ultra Rose form itself is a domesticated aquarium strain. Selective breeding has enhanced its body colour, tail pattern and finnage over many generations.

Half Black Ultra Rose is a selectively bred fancy guppy strain developed in the aquarium trade rather than a naturally occurring wild population. Its wild ancestor, Poecilia reticulata, originates from northern South America, including Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and parts of northern Brazil, as well as several nearby Caribbean islands.

A group of Half Black Ultra Rose Guppies should have at least a 60-litre aquarium, with a footprint around 60 × 30 cm or larger; a bigger tank is preferable if females and fry are present. Use gentle to moderate filtration with safe circulation, open swimming space and dense plants such as Java moss, guppy grass or hornwort for cover. A fine gravel or sand substrate works well, supplemented with smooth wood, rocks and floating vegetation while leaving room at the surface and through the centre of the aquarium. Maintain stable, clean, moderately hard freshwater at approximately 22–28°C and pH 7.0–8.0.

Males reach about 3 cm (1.2 inches) in body length, excluding the tail, while females can grow to around 6 cm (2.4 inches). The impressive tail and finnage of fancy males may make their overall length appear greater, but females are normally the larger and more robust sex.

Offer Half Black Ultra Rose Guppies a varied omnivorous diet built around a quality tropical flake or small micro-pellet. Supplement this with blanched vegetables or algae-based foods and occasional frozen or live treats such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae and bloodworms. Feed small portions once or twice daily, ensuring that all food is consumed quickly, and provide appropriately fine food for fry.

Half Black Ultra Rose Guppies are peaceful and suit community aquariums with similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Good companions include peaceful tetras, rasboras, small danios, Corydoras, kuhli loaches, otocinclus and other calm livebearers, provided their water preferences are compatible. Avoid fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs, aggressive or predatory fish, and large fish that may eat them. Long-finned males can also be harassed by persistent fin nippers, while bettas may be incompatible because of their territorial behaviour and tendency to mistake guppies for rivals.

Half Black Ultra Rose Guppies are livebearers and breed readily in a mature aquarium. Keep a ratio of one male to two or three females to reduce persistent courtship, and provide dense plants or spawning mops where fry can hide. Females give birth to free-swimming young after roughly 21–30 days, depending on temperature and conditions. Adults may eat the fry, so separate the female before birth or raise the young in a well-planted nursery area and feed them finely powdered fry food or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Males are smaller, slimmer and much more colourful, with enlarged ornamental tails and a pointed gonopodium instead of a standard anal fin. Females are larger-bodied, less intensely patterned and usually have a rounded abdomen; mature females may also show a dark gravid spot near the rear of the belly.
