Half Black Rose Guppies are a striking fancy guppy variety recognised for the deep black coloration across the rear half of the body, contrasted with a rose-red to pink tail and matching accents. Selective breeding can produce considerable variation in tail shape, pattern definition and colour intensity, making each fish slightly different.

Like other guppies, they are active, alert livebearers that spend much of their time in the middle and upper levels of the aquarium. They are generally peaceful and sociable, with males displaying to females and to one another through constant movement and colourful courtship.

Wild Poecilia reticulata are small, adaptable fish associated with shallow streams, pools, drainage channels and vegetated margins. Their natural environments can range from clear flowing water to warm, slow-moving habitats with abundant cover and fluctuating conditions.

The Half Black Rose pattern is a domesticated development maintained by aquarium breeders. It combines the hardy, prolific character of the common guppy with a selectively developed colour pattern that is especially popular in fancy guppy collections.

Half Black Rose Guppies are a selectively bred aquarium strain of Poecilia reticulata, rather than a naturally occurring wild variety. The species originates from northern South America, including Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname, as well as nearby Caribbean islands such as Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados.

A group of Half Black Rose Guppies is best kept in an aquarium of at least 40 litres, with a footprint around 60 × 30 cm; a larger tank is preferable if both sexes are kept because the population can increase rapidly. Use gentle to moderate filtration, open swimming space and a secure lid, as guppies can jump. Live plants, floating cover and fine-leaved vegetation provide shelter for fry, while smooth gravel or sand makes a suitable substrate. Hardscape should be free of sharp edges that could damage their flowing fins.

Males reach about 3 cm (1.2 in), while females can grow to approximately 6 cm (2.4 in).

Offer Half Black Rose Guppies a varied diet based on a quality small tropical flake or micro-pellet, supplemented with blanched vegetables and occasional frozen or live foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia and mosquito larvae. Young fry benefit from finely powdered food or newly hatched brine shrimp. Feed small portions that are consumed quickly, rather than allowing excess food to collect.

Half Black Rose Guppies can live with other peaceful community fish of a similar size, including small tetras, rasboras, peaceful corydoras, otocinclus, platies and gentle dwarf gouramis. Avoid fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs, aggressive or predatory fish, and larger cichlids. Long-finned males may be harassed by persistent nippers, while very slow or delicate fish can be unsettled by the guppies’ constant activity. Keep several females for each male to reduce excessive courtship pressure.

Half Black Rose Guppies are livebearers and usually breed readily in a mature aquarium. The male fertilises the female internally, after which she gives birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry after roughly 21–30 days, depending on temperature and conditions. Provide dense plants, floating cover or a separate breeding area so the young can escape predation, as adults may eat newborn fry. A female can store sperm and produce several broods from one mating.

Females are noticeably larger and deeper-bodied than males, with a rounded abdomen and a relatively short, less ornate tail. Males are smaller and more slender, display stronger colour and have an elongated anal fin modified into a gonopodium for reproduction.
