What makes the Green Terror such a striking cichlid?

The Green Terror, Andinoacara rivulatus, is a large and colourful South American cichlid known for its metallic blue-green body, vivid orange edging and assertive personality. Mature fish can develop impressive turquoise facial markings, while the dorsal, anal and caudal fins often carry bright orange or red margins. Despite the common name, its appearance and temperament vary considerably between individuals.

These cichlids are intelligent, observant fish that quickly learn to recognise their keeper and often patrol the aquarium with confidence. They are territorial rather than naturally shoaling, and a bonded pair may claim a substantial area as their own. Their displays become especially dramatic during courtship or when they are defending eggs and fry.

In the wild, Green Terrors are found in flowing rivers, tributaries and quieter margins where rocks, submerged wood and other structures provide cover and spawning sites. Their natural waters can vary in clarity and flow, but the species is generally associated with warm, oxygen-rich freshwater habitats.

Andinoacara rivulatus has sometimes been confused in the aquarium trade with the closely related Andinoacara stalsbergi, which is also sold under Green Terror-related names. True Green Terrors are robust, long-lived fish that make a memorable centrepiece, but their adult size and territorial behaviour require thoughtful planning.

Where do Green Terrors occur naturally?

Green Terrors are native to the Pacific-facing drainages of north-western South America, especially coastal Ecuador and northern Peru. They inhabit rivers and streams that flow from the Andes towards the Pacific Ocean.

What water temperature suits Green Terrors best?

Celsius: 2228 °C
Fahrenheit: 7282 °F

Which pH range keeps Green Terrors comfortable?

Ideal pH: 6.57.5

Should Green Terrors be kept alone or in groups?

Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.

What aquarium setup do Green Terrors need?

A single adult Green Terror needs at least 280 litres, while a compatible pair is better housed in 350 litres or more. Aim for a footprint of at least 120 × 45 cm for one adult, with a larger aquarium preferred for a pair or a community setup. Use a sturdy aquarium with efficient filtration, strong oxygenation and secure equipment, as these powerful fish may move or damage decorations. A fine sand or smooth gravel substrate, rounded rocks, caves and robust pieces of driftwood create useful boundaries and shelter; avoid sharp decor and delicate plants, which may be uprooted or damaged.

How large can Green Terrors become?

Males can reach around 30 cm (12 in) in length, although many aquarium males remain closer to 20–25 cm (8–10 in). Females are usually smaller, reaching approximately 20–25 cm (8–10 in).

What should Green Terrors eat?

Green Terrors are omnivores and should receive a varied diet based on high-quality cichlid pellets or granules. Supplement this with frozen or live foods such as prawns, mussels, earthworms, bloodworm and brine shrimp, along with occasional vegetable matter such as spirulina-based foods. Feed sensible portions rather than allowing them to gorge, and avoid relying heavily on mammalian meat, which is difficult for fish to digest and can contribute to health problems.

Which fish can live alongside Green Terrors?

Green Terrors are best kept with robust, similarly sized South American cichlids and other confident fish that will not be easily intimidated. Potential companions include large peaceful catfish such as sailfin plecos, large loricariids, silver dollars and carefully selected medium-to-large cichlids, provided the aquarium is spacious and territories can be established. Avoid small tetras, shrimp, snails and delicate community fish, which may be eaten or harassed. They can be highly aggressive when spawning, and even normally compatible tankmates may need to be separated.

How can Green Terrors be encouraged to spawn?

Green Terrors are substrate-spawning cichlids that will usually breed readily once mature and settled. Provide a smooth, flat stone, slate, or other clean spawning surface, then condition the pair with a varied, protein-rich diet. The female may lay several hundred eggs, which the pair guard and fan. Eggs generally hatch within a few days, and the free-swimming fry can be raised on freshly hatched brine shrimp or a suitable powdered fry food. Remove other fish from the breeding aquarium, as the parents become exceptionally territorial.

What are the differences between male and female Green Terrors?

Males are generally larger and may develop longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins, with stronger fin extensions and more intense colouration. Females are typically shorter-bodied with less pronounced fin streamers, although young or poorly conditioned fish can be difficult to sex reliably.
