What makes the Green Phantom Plec distinctive?

The Green Phantom Plec is a striking loricariid catfish with a dark olive to greenish body, often marked with yellow-green spotting and subtle vermiculated patterning. Its flattened form, armoured plates and sucker-shaped mouth are classic pleco features, while the L200 form is especially valued for its unusual green coloration.

This species spends much of its time attached to rocks, wood and other firm surfaces, using its mouth to graze over the growth that accumulates there. It is generally peaceful toward unrelated fish, although adults can become territorial with other bottom-dwelling catfish, particularly in confined quarters.

In the wild, Green Phantom Plecs live among submerged rocks, boulders and patches of driftwood in flowing water. Their body shape and strong fins are well suited to gripping surfaces in current, and they are most active from dusk through the night.

The name L200 is a trade designation used for the green phantom group, and the fish has historically been associated with more than one similar-looking Hemiancistrus form. Hemiancistrus subviridis is the scientifically recognised species commonly sold under the Green Phantom Plec name.

Where are Green Phantom Plecs found in nature?

Hemiancistrus subviridis is native to the upper Orinoco River basin in Venezuela, northern South America. It inhabits clear, well-oxygenated tributaries and main channels with rocky bottoms and a strong current.

What water temperature suits Green Phantom Plecos?

Celsius: 2430 °C
Fahrenheit: 7686 °F

Which pH range keeps a Green Phantom Plec comfortable?

Ideal pH: 6.57.5

Do Green Phantom Plecs need company?

Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.

How should a Green Phantom Plec aquarium be arranged?

A single Green Phantom Plec should have at least 250 litres, with a footprint of around 120 × 45 cm or larger; a bigger aquarium is preferable for a full-grown adult or multiple specimens. Provide powerful filtration, high oxygen levels and brisk but varied water movement, together with regular maintenance. Use smooth sand or fine rounded gravel, sturdy driftwood, flat rocks and several caves or tubes with entrances suited to the fish. Leave open areas for grazing and make sure all décor is stable, as large plecos can shift loose objects while foraging.

How large can Green Phantom Plecs become?

Up to about 25 cm (10 inches) in total length. Males are often slightly larger and more robust than females, although individual size varies.

What should a Green Phantom Plec eat?

This omnivorous grazer should receive a varied diet based on algae wafers, quality sinking catfish pellets and blanched vegetables such as courgette, cucumber, spinach and green beans. Driftwood should be available for natural grazing, but algae alone is not sufficient. Supplement the diet occasionally with protein-rich foods such as shrimp pellets, insect-based foods or frozen foods, especially for growing fish and breeding adults.

Which fish make good companions for Green Phantom Plecs?

Green Phantom Plecs can be kept with peaceful South American community fish such as larger tetras, pencilfish, peaceful barbs, rasboras, dwarf cichlids and other calm midwater species. They may also live with peaceful bottom dwellers when plenty of caves and territory are available. Avoid aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping fish and combining several similarly sized plecos in a small aquarium, as males may quarrel over shelter and feeding areas.

How can Green Phantom Plecs be bred in the aquarium?

Green Phantom Plecs are cave-spawning catfish that are most likely to breed in mature, spacious aquariums with excellent water quality, strong oxygenation and suitable breeding caves. The male selects and guards a narrow cave while the female deposits a batch of eggs inside. After fertilisation, the male protects and fans the eggs until they hatch, and the fry can be raised on soft algae-based foods and finely crushed sinking foods once their yolk sacs are absorbed.

How can male and female Green Phantom Plecs be distinguished?

Mature males usually develop more pronounced bristles or odontodes along the cheeks and the front edges of the pectoral fins, and they tend to have a broader head and slimmer abdomen. Females generally have a rounder, fuller body, particularly when carrying eggs, and show fewer facial odontodes.
