What are Goliath Tiger Fish like?

The Goliath Tiger Fish is one of the most imposing freshwater predators in the world. Hydrocynus goliath has a long, powerful body, a deeply forked tail and a silvery-gold sheen that is often marked with darker shading along the back. Its most memorable feature is its large, sharply pointed teeth, which fit visibly along the jaws even when the mouth is closed.

Where do Goliath Tiger Fish originate?

Goliath Tiger Fish are native to central Africa, especially the Congo River Basin and its major tributaries, including parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo. They inhabit large rivers, channels and connected lakes across the region.

What water temperature suits Goliath Tiger Fish?

Celsius: 2428 °C
Fahrenheit: 7582 °F

Which pH range is best for Goliath Tiger Fish?

Ideal pH: 6.57.5

Should Goliath Tiger Fish be kept alone or in groups?

Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.

What kind of aquarium can house Goliath Tiger Fish?

An adult Goliath Tiger Fish requires a public-aquarium-scale enclosure rather than a normal home tank. A realistic adult setup would need several thousand litres at minimum, with a long, wide footprint of roughly 300 by 100 cm or greater and substantial swimming length; larger dimensions are strongly preferable for a fish that can exceed one metre. The enclosure should provide powerful filtration, excellent oxygenation, secure covers and ample unobstructed open water, with smooth hardscape and sturdy decor positioned so it cannot injure the fish during rapid movements. Fine or rounded substrate is safer than sharp gravel. Even very large private aquariums may be inadequate for a full-grown specimen.

How large can Goliath Tiger Fish become?

Goliath Tiger Fish can reach approximately 133 cm (52 in) in total length in the wild. Published aquarium specimens are often much smaller, and a dependable sexual size difference has not been established.

What does a Goliath Tiger Fish eat?

This species is an obligate carnivore that feeds primarily on fish, using speed, powerful jaws and prominent teeth to seize prey. Larger individuals may also take other aquatic animals when available. In captivity, an appropriately varied diet can include whole fish and other nutritionally suitable aquatic prey, while excessive reliance on fatty feeder fish should be avoided because it can lead to nutritional problems and disease transmission.

Which fish can live with Goliath Tiger Fish?

Goliath Tiger Fish are highly predatory and will attempt to swallow or tear apart almost any fish that can fit in their mouths. They are therefore unsuitable for ordinary community aquariums and should not be housed with tetras, barbs, cichlids, catfish or other smaller species. In exceptionally large professional exhibits, carefully selected robust fish of comparable size may sometimes be considered, but even these combinations carry a significant risk of injury or predation.

How are Goliath Tiger Fish bred?

Goliath Tiger Fish have not been reliably bred on a routine basis in home aquaria. In the wild, they are believed to reproduce seasonally in large river systems, with spawning associated with rising water levels and access to suitable floodplain or marginal habitats. Their enormous adult size, migratory behaviour and specialised environmental requirements make captive breeding a project for major public aquariums or research facilities rather than private keepers.

Can male and female Goliath Tiger Fish be told apart?

Males and females are not reliably distinguishable by obvious external features. Females may become heavier-bodied when mature, particularly when carrying eggs, but body shape alone is not a dependable method of sexing this species.
