Goldie Plec L014 Care Guide - Aquarium Setup, Diet & Breeding

The Goldie Plec L014 is a striking armoured catfish with a broad, powerful body and a deep golden-yellow base colour marked with darker reticulation and spots. Its robust appearance, large fins and sweeping whisker-like facial features give it the classic presence associated with large loricariid catfish. Individuals can develop especially vivid colouration when settled and in good condition.

This species spends much of its time attached to rock, wood and other firm surfaces, using its sucker-shaped mouth to hold position in flowing water. It is generally peaceful towards fish of other types, but adults can become assertive and territorial with similarly shaped bottom-dwellers, particularly around favoured caves and feeding sites.

In the wild, Goldie Plecos are associated with the rocky rapids and runs of the Rio Xingu. Their flattened body, strong fins and specialised mouth reflect life in a river environment where currents are swift and exposed surfaces are common. The habitat is typically bright, highly oxygenated and structured by boulders, crevices and patches of submerged timber.

The species is known in the aquarium trade by its L-number, L014, and is prized by experienced fishkeepers for its bold patterning and impressive adult size. It is a long-lived fish when given suitable space and stable conditions, but its eventual bulk makes it a poor choice for a small community aquarium.

Scobinancistrus aureatus is native to the lower and middle Rio Xingu basin in Pará, Brazil, in South America. It inhabits warm, clear, fast-flowing sections of the river, where rocky surfaces and submerged wood provide shelter and feeding grounds.

An adult Goldie Pleco should have at least a 300-litre aquarium, with a footprint of around 150 cm by 50 cm as a practical minimum guideline; larger is preferable because this species becomes bulky and produces considerable waste. Use powerful filtration, vigorous surface movement and excellent oxygenation to recreate a clean river environment. Build the layout around smooth rocks, sturdy bogwood and one or more caves large enough for the fish to turn around in, while leaving open swimming and feeding areas. A sand or fine rounded-gravel substrate is suitable, and all décor must be stable enough not to collapse beneath a large, active catfish.

Up to about 30 cm (12 in) in total length. Females may reach a similar overall size, while mature males are often bulkier and develop more pronounced bristles and odontodes.

Goldie Plecos are omnivorous grazers that should receive a varied diet rather than being expected to live on algae alone. Offer high-quality sinking pellets or wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach and other suitable vegetables, supplemented occasionally with foods such as prawns, mussel or insect-based pellets. Feed after the aquarium lights dim, when this largely nocturnal catfish is most active, and remove uneaten fresh food promptly.

Goldie Plecos can share a large aquarium with peaceful, sturdy South American fish such as larger tetras, peaceful characins, severums, geophagus, peaceful South American cichlids and other robust riverine species. They may also coexist with carefully selected large rasboras or peaceful barbs. Avoid housing them with aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping fish or several large plecos competing for the same caves and feeding areas. Multiple Goldie Plecos may become territorial unless the aquarium is exceptionally spacious and offers numerous separate shelters.

Goldie Plecos are cave-spawning catfish and are rarely bred outside specialist aquariums. Provide a close-fitting ceramic or slate cave, excellent water quality and strong, well-oxygenated flow. The male usually selects and defends the cave, while the female deposits adhesive eggs inside. After fertilisation, he guards and fans the eggs until they hatch and continues to protect the fry for a short period. Young fish can be raised on soft algae-based foods and finely crushed sinking foods, although successful spawning generally requires mature, well-conditioned adults.

Mature males are usually more heavily built through the head and body and develop stronger odontodes or bristle-like projections on the cheeks and along the pectoral-fin region, especially when breeding. Females tend to have a rounder abdomen and a smoother head, with much less obvious odontode development.
