Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnow Care Guide - Aquarium Setup, Diet & Breeding

The Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnow is a selectively bred colour form of the White Cloud Mountain Minnow, with a warm golden-yellow body that contrasts beautifully with its red-tipped fins and shimmering lateral stripe. Its compact, streamlined shape and lively swimming style make it an attractive inhabitant for cool freshwater aquariums.

These peaceful minnows are active, alert and social fish that spend much of their time in the middle and upper regions of the aquarium. They form loose groups rather than moving as a perfectly coordinated shoal, and males may display to one another by spreading their fins and intensifying their colours.

In the wild, White Cloud Mountain Minnows are associated with clear, cool streams and pools with gentle flow, gravelly areas and aquatic or overhanging vegetation. Their natural environment is often well oxygenated and subject to seasonal changes in temperature and water level.

The golden form retains the hardy, adaptable nature of the original species and is especially well suited to peaceful cool-water communities. It is not a tropical fish, despite being commonly sold alongside small tropical species, and its vivid colour is most striking when the fish are relaxed and kept in a social group.

Tanichthys albonubes originates from southern China, particularly the Pearl River basin in Guangdong Province, Asia. Wild populations have also been associated with nearby areas of northern Vietnam, although the species is now scarce or locally extinct in parts of its original Chinese range.

A group should be housed in an aquarium of at least 40 litres, with a footprint of roughly 60 cm by 30 cm or larger to provide useful swimming length. Use gentle filtration with good oxygenation, open swimming space and a secure lid, as these active minnows can jump. A fine gravel or sand substrate, smooth stones, driftwood and hardy plants such as Java fern, Anubias, Vallisneria or water sprite create a natural stream-like setting while leaving room for group swimming.

Up to 4 cm (1.6 in) in total length. Females are usually slightly larger and deeper-bodied than males.

Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnows are omnivores and should receive a varied diet of high-quality small flakes, nano pellets and granules. Supplement these foods with frozen or live options such as daphnia, mosquito larvae, cyclops and brine shrimp. Small portions offered once or twice daily are ideal, and food should be suitably tiny for their small mouths.

Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnows are peaceful community fish and can be kept with other similarly sized, gentle cool-water species. Suitable companions include zebra danios, celestial pearl danios, other White Cloud varieties, rosy loaches, small peaceful barbs, hillstream loaches and suitable freshwater shrimp, provided their needs overlap. Avoid large, aggressive or predatory fish, fin-nipping species and warm-water fish such as many tropical tetras, angelfish and discus, which may be unsuitable because of temperature differences.

Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnows are egg-scatterers that can breed readily in a mature, well-conditioned aquarium. Provide fine-leaved plants, spawning mops or a protected breeding area, and offer plenty of small live or frozen foods. Adults may eat the eggs, so remove them after spawning or use a separate spawning tank. Eggs generally hatch within two to three days, and the tiny fry can be raised on infusoria or commercially prepared fry food before progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp.

Males are generally slimmer, more vividly coloured and have longer, more pointed fins, with stronger red and gold markings during displays. Females are typically fuller through the abdomen, especially when carrying eggs, and their fins are shorter and more rounded.
