The Gold Nugget Pleco is a striking loricariid catfish, recognised by its dark brown to black body, vivid yellow spots and bright yellow edging on the dorsal and caudal fins. The pattern varies between locality and collection form, with some fish showing larger spots and stronger fin markings than others. Its armoured body and broad, sucker-shaped mouth are classic features of a river-dwelling pleco.

Despite their bold appearance, Gold Nugget Plecos are generally secretive, spending much of the day pressed against rockwork, wood or shaded surfaces. They become more active after dark, when they explore their surroundings and graze across hard surfaces with their rasping mouthparts. Adults can become territorial, particularly around caves and preferred resting places.

In the wild, this species is associated with fast-flowing sections of the Rio Xingu and its tributaries. Rocky substrates, submerged timber and well-oxygenated water provide shelter and a steady supply of algae, biofilm and small invertebrate foods. Its specialised body shape and strong suckermouth reflect life in turbulent water.

Baryancistrus xanthellus is commonly sold under several L-number designations, especially L018, L081 and L177, because related collection forms can look very similar. It is a rewarding species for experienced aquarists, but its eventual size, territorial nature and need for pristine, oxygen-rich water should be considered before purchase.

Gold Nugget Plecos are native to the Rio Xingu basin in Pará, Brazil, in South America. They inhabit warm, clear to slightly tea-stained tributaries and rocky rapids with strong current and abundant submerged wood and aufwuchs.

A single adult Gold Nugget Pleco should have an aquarium of at least 300 litres, with a footprint around 120 cm long by 45 cm deep; a larger aquarium is preferable for mature specimens or more than one fish. Use powerful, reliable filtration and strong circulation with excellent oxygenation, while avoiding stagnant areas. Provide smooth rocks, robust driftwood, shaded caves and secure hiding places, along with open surfaces for grazing. A fine sand or smooth gravel substrate helps protect the fish’s underside and mouth, and all decor should be stable because this powerful catfish can shift objects while foraging.

Gold Nugget Plecos can reach approximately 30 cm (12 inches) in total length. Males commonly grow larger and develop a more substantial head and body than females, although captive fish are often smaller.

Gold Nugget Plecos are omnivorous grazers that feed on algae, aufwuchs, biofilm, plant matter and small aquatic organisms. Offer a varied diet of quality sinking wafers or pellets, spirulina-based foods, blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach and other suitable vegetables, supplemented occasionally with foods such as prawns, bloodworm or other meaty offerings. Driftwood should be available as part of the natural grazing environment, and young or newly imported specimens benefit from frequent access to nutritious food rather than relying on algae alone.

Gold Nugget Plecos are usually peaceful towards midwater and upper-level fish and can be kept with robust tetras, rasboras, peaceful barbs, larger livebearers, South American characins and calm cichlids. Suitable bottom-dwelling companions include peaceful Corydoras and other non-aggressive catfish, provided there is enough space and shelter. Avoid housing them with highly aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping species or several similarly territorial plecos in a cramped aquarium. Multiple plecos may coexist in a large tank with plenty of separate caves, but males can defend territories vigorously.

Gold Nugget Plecos are cave-spawning catfish that require mature, well-conditioned adults and suitable breeding caves. The male usually selects and defends a tight-fitting cave while the female deposits a clutch of eggs inside. After fertilisation, the male guards and fans the eggs until they hatch. Strong filtration, warm, highly oxygenated water and a varied, nutritious diet can encourage spawning, although captive breeding is uncommon and successful rearing requires excellent water quality and suitable first foods for the fry.

Mature males are usually larger, broader-headed and more heavily built, and they may develop more pronounced odontodes or bristle-like structures along the cheeks and sides of the body. Females are generally shorter and rounder through the abdomen, especially when carrying eggs, with less-developed facial odontodes.
