What are GloFish Angelfish® like?

GloFish Angelfish® are selectively fluorescent forms of the freshwater angelfish, Pterophyllum scalare. Their tall, laterally compressed bodies and elongated dorsal, anal and ventral fins give them a distinctive triangular profile, while their fluorescent colours are especially noticeable under suitable aquarium lighting. The underlying angelfish form remains the same as the familiar species, with the added ornamental glow produced by genetic modification.

These are graceful but substantial cichlids with individual personalities. They often cruise through the middle and upper levels of the aquarium, investigate their surroundings and establish a social hierarchy. Young fish may shoal loosely, while mature fish commonly form pairs and defend a chosen territory when spawning.

In nature, Pterophyllum scalare inhabits calm, warm waters among submerged roots, branches and dense aquatic vegetation. Its narrow body allows it to manoeuvre through vertically structured cover, and its tall fins help it make controlled movements through sheltered forest streams and flooded habitats.

GloFish Angelfish® are not a separate wild species; they are commercially produced ornamental angelfish derived from Pterophyllum scalare. Their fluorescent appearance makes them a striking centrepiece fish, but they retain the size, cichlid behaviour and long-term care needs of ordinary freshwater angelfish.

Where do GloFish Angelfish® originate?

GloFish Angelfish® are fluorescent ornamental forms of Pterophyllum scalare, a freshwater species native to tropical South America. Wild angelfish occur across parts of the Amazon, Essequibo and Orinoco river systems, particularly in slow-moving tributaries, flooded forests and vegetated waterways.

What water temperature suits GloFish Angelfish® best?

Celsius: 2428 °C
Fahrenheit: 7582 °F

Which pH range is right for GloFish Angelfish®?

Ideal pH: 67.5

How many GloFish Angelfish® should live together?

Keep at least 6 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

What aquarium setup do GloFish Angelfish® need?

A group of young GloFish Angelfish® should be raised in at least a 280-litre aquarium, while a compatible adult pair needs around 190 litres as an absolute minimum. A tank measuring approximately 120 cm long by 45 cm wide and 50 cm high is a useful starting point, with greater height and volume preferable for a group or community aquarium. Use fine sand or smooth gravel, sturdy plants, driftwood and vertically arranged décor to provide cover without restricting swimming space. Leave open areas for movement, use secure filtration with moderate circulation, and avoid sharp ornaments that can damage their long fins.

How large can GloFish Angelfish® become?

Adults can reach about 15 cm (6 in) in body length, while the full height including the extended dorsal and anal fins may approach 25 cm (10 in). Males are often slightly larger and more robust than females, although size varies considerably between individuals and strains.

What should GloFish Angelfish® eat?

GloFish Angelfish® are omnivores and do best on a varied diet. Offer a quality cichlid pellet or flake as the staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia and mosquito larvae. Occasional vegetable ingredients can add variety, and young fish should receive appropriately small foods several times daily. Feed modest portions that are consumed promptly to help maintain water quality and avoid obesity.

Which fish make good tankmates for GloFish Angelfish®?

Suitable tankmates include peaceful, medium-sized fish that appreciate warm water, such as larger tetras, peaceful barbs, rasboras, mature corydoras, larger peaceful catfish and some calm gouramis. Avoid fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs, very small fish that may be eaten, slow long-finned fish such as fancy guppies, and aggressive cichlids. GloFish Angelfish® can become territorial when pairing or spawning, so tankmates need sufficient space and cover to avoid persistent conflict.

How can GloFish Angelfish® be bred successfully?

GloFish Angelfish® breed in the same way as standard Pterophyllum scalare. Once a compatible pair forms, it will usually select and clean a broad vertical surface before the female lays rows of adhesive eggs and the male fertilises them. The parents may fan and guard the clutch, although inexperienced pairs sometimes eat their eggs. For reliable results, provide a separate breeding aquarium with very clean, gently filtered water and a removable spawning surface; the eggs generally hatch after a few days, with free-swimming fry requiring very small foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp.

How can male and female GloFish Angelfish® be distinguished?

Males are often somewhat larger, broader-headed and more robust, sometimes developing a fuller forehead profile. Females are commonly a little smaller with a smoother head shape, but these differences are unreliable; the clearest distinction is the breeding tube, which is broader and blunt in females and narrower and more pointed in males when spawning.
