The Figure of Eight Puffer is a compact, highly characterful pufferfish named for the dark markings on its golden-brown back, which often resemble the number eight or a pair of eyes. Its rounded body, inquisitive expression and constantly moving eyes give it considerable personality, while its small fins provide precise manoeuvring rather than sustained speed.

Adults usually display a pale cream underside and a mottled yellow, brown and olive pattern across the back. Like other puffers, this species can inflate its body when frightened, although deliberate provocation should never be used to make it do so. It also has strong, continuously growing teeth adapted for crushing hard-shelled prey.

In the wild, Figure of Eight Puffers explore shallow tidal waterways, mangrove margins and brackish channels. They are active hunters that investigate crevices and the substrate for snails, crustaceans and other small invertebrates.

Despite their appealing appearance, they are territorial and can be nippy, particularly in confined aquariums. Each fish has an individual temperament, but their predatory nature and sensitivity to poor water quality make them better suited to species-focused aquariums than ordinary community tanks.

Figure of Eight Puffers come from coastal and tidal waters of Southeast Asia, including parts of Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and nearby regions. They inhabit slow-moving estuaries, mangrove creeks and other environments where freshwater mixes with seawater.

Allow at least 75 litres for one adult, with a larger aquarium preferred; a footprint of around 90 × 30 cm or greater gives useful swimming and territorial space. Use a mature, tightly covered aquarium with efficient filtration, gentle circulation and stable brackish conditions rather than treating this fish as a permanent freshwater species. Fine sand or smooth gravel, rounded rocks, caves, roots and hardy brackish-tolerant plants can provide shelter and visual boundaries, while open areas should remain available for exploration.

Figure of Eight Puffers reach about 8 cm (3.1 in) in total length. Females may become slightly larger and fuller-bodied than males, although individual size varies.

Offer a varied diet built around hard-shelled foods such as ramshorn and pond snails, cockles, mussels, clams and unshelled shrimp. These foods help wear down the puffer's continuously growing teeth. Frozen foods can supplement the diet, but soft foods alone are unsuitable; feed modest portions and remove uneaten food promptly because puffers are messy eaters.

Figure of Eight Puffers are safest when kept alone, especially in smaller aquariums. They may harass or bite slow-moving, long-finned or bottom-dwelling fish, and they can fight with other puffers over territory. In a very large, carefully arranged brackish aquarium, robust, fast-swimming species such as some mollies or hardy brackish gobies may sometimes work, but compatibility is never guaranteed and close monitoring is essential.

Figure of Eight Puffers are rarely bred successfully in home aquariums. Spawning may occur in brackish water when a compatible pair is provided with excellent water quality, a spacious mature aquarium and quiet surroundings. Eggs are deposited on a solid surface, with the male sometimes guarding them, but raising the larvae is difficult because they require very small live foods and carefully managed salinity as they develop.

Sexing Figure of Eight Puffers is difficult, particularly outside breeding condition. Mature females are often somewhat larger and rounder, while males may be slimmer and can show a more pronounced dark line along the underside, but these features are not always reliable.
