Festivum Cichlid Care Guide - Aquarium Setup, Diet & Breeding

The Festivum Cichlid, Mesonauta festivus, is an elegant South American cichlid often called the Flag Cichlid because of its tall, laterally compressed body and distinctive diagonal dark stripe. The stripe runs from the mouth, across the eye and toward the rear of the dorsal region, giving the fish a refined, almost pennant-like appearance. Depending on mood and surroundings, the base colour can range from silvery beige to olive, yellowish or soft grey, with subtle iridescent highlights.

Despite their graceful appearance, Festivum Cichlids are alert and intelligent fish with plenty of personality. They investigate their surroundings carefully, recognise activity outside the aquarium and often develop strong pair bonds. They are generally less aggressive than many larger cichlids, although territorial behaviour becomes more pronounced when a pair is breeding.

In nature, these cichlids are found in calm, warm waters associated with flooded woodland, river margins and dense aquatic vegetation. Their tall body allows them to manoeuvre between stems, roots and branches, while their markings help break up their outline among shadowed plants and submerged cover.

Festivum Cichlids are active without being constantly boisterous, and a settled group can provide an engaging centrepiece for a spacious South American community aquarium. Individual fish may display changes in colour and stripe intensity as they communicate, establish social rank or respond to their surroundings.

Festivum Cichlids are native to parts of tropical South America, with populations associated with the Amazon and Paraguay-Paraná river systems. Their range includes areas of Brazil, Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay, where they inhabit slow-moving rivers, flooded forests, backwaters and vegetated margins.

A pair should be provided with an aquarium of at least 200 litres, with a footprint around 120 cm long by 40 cm wide or larger; a group or community setup benefits from considerably more space. Use fine sand or smooth small gravel, arrange driftwood and rocks to create visual barriers, and include sturdy plants or floating vegetation for cover. Leave open swimming areas as well as shaded retreats, and secure decorations firmly because breeding fish may rearrange parts of the layout. Efficient filtration, gentle water movement and stable, clean water are important for this sensitive riverine cichlid.

Up to around 15 cm (6 in) in total length. Females are often slightly smaller and less robust than males, although size differences can be modest.

Festivum Cichlids are omnivores that benefit from a varied diet. Offer a good-quality cichlid pellet or flake as the staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworm, daphnia and mosquito larvae. Small portions of blanched spinach, peas or spirulina-based foods can provide useful plant matter. Feed modest amounts that are consumed promptly, taking care not to overfeed these naturally opportunistic fish.

Festivum Cichlids can live with similarly sized, peaceful South American fish such as larger tetras, peaceful barbs, medium-sized Corydoras, peaceful loricariid catfish, pencilfish and other calm cichlids with compatible water requirements. Suitable tankmates should be too large to swallow and should not be highly aggressive or excessively boisterous. Avoid very small fish, fin-nippers and territorial species such as many Central American cichlids. During spawning, even normally placid adults may defend an area vigorously, so tankmates need room to retreat.

Festivum Cichlids are substrate-spawning cichlids that usually form a bonded pair. They lay their eggs on a smooth, firm surface such as a broad leaf, piece of slate or aquarium decoration, then both parents defend and tend the clutch. Provide clean, warm, slightly acidic to neutral water and offer suitable spawning surfaces. The eggs generally hatch within a few days, with the parents guarding the wrigglers and newly free-swimming fry. Feed the fry freshly hatched baby brine shrimp or another suitably fine, nutritious food.

Festivum Cichlids are difficult to sex with certainty outside a breeding situation. Mature males may grow slightly larger and develop somewhat longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins, while females are often shorter-bodied and fuller through the abdomen, particularly when carrying eggs.
