What are Fairy Cichlids like?

The Fairy Cichlid is a graceful Tanganyikan cichlid with a slender, lightly compressed body, pale beige to silvery colouring and delicate blue edging on the fins. Depending on mood and lighting, the body may show subtle lavender, gold or grey tones, while the elongated tail and flowing fin filaments give this fish an elegant appearance.

Unlike many larger cichlids, Fairy Cichlids remain relatively small, but they are far from timid. They are alert, intelligent fish that investigate their surroundings and communicate through posture, colour changes and territorial displays. A bonded pair may defend a breeding site vigorously, while a larger family group can occupy and patrol a network of nearby rocky shelters.

In the wild, they are closely associated with the rocky littoral zone of Lake Tanganyika. The spaces between boulders provide shelter, spawning surfaces and boundaries between neighbouring groups. Their natural habitat is clear, mineral-rich and strongly alkaline, with very little vegetation compared with a typical planted aquarium.

One of the species' most fascinating traits is its extended family structure. Older offspring often remain with their parents and assist with the defence of younger siblings, producing a lively colony of different-sized fish. This cooperative behaviour makes Neolamprologus brichardi one of the most socially interesting cichlids available to aquarists.

Where do Fairy Cichlids originate?

Fairy Cichlids are native to the rocky shoreline habitats of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. They occur in parts of Burundi, the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and nearby lake regions, where they inhabit clear, hard, alkaline water.

What water temperature suits Fairy Cichlids?

Celsius: 2228 °C
Fahrenheit: 7282 °F

Which pH range is best for Fairy Cichlids?

Ideal pH: 7.08.5

How many Fairy Cichlids should live together?

Keep at least 6 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

How should a Fairy Cichlid aquarium be arranged?

A group should have at least a 120-litre aquarium, with a footprint of around 90 by 40 cm or larger; a longer tank is preferable for a developing colony. Build numerous caves, crevices and visual barriers from securely positioned limestone or other aquarium-safe rock, leaving open swimming routes and several potential territories. A fine sand substrate is suitable and reflects the lakebed, while hardy plants are optional rather than essential. Strong filtration, good oxygenation and stable, mineral-rich alkaline water are important.

How large do Fairy Cichlids become?

Males reach up to about 10 cm (4 in), while females are usually smaller at around 7–8 cm (2.8–3.1 in).

What should Fairy Cichlids eat?

Fairy Cichlids are omnivorous and benefit from a varied diet based on high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with finely chopped seafood, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp and occasional vegetable-based foods. Feed small portions regularly rather than offering one large meal. Avoid relying heavily on rich mammalian foods, which are poorly suited to their digestive system.

Which fish can share an aquarium with Fairy Cichlids?

Fairy Cichlids can be kept with suitably robust Lake Tanganyika species that occupy different areas or have comparable water requirements, such as certain Julidochromis, Cyprichromis and shell-dwelling Neolamprologus when the aquarium is sufficiently spacious. They should not be combined with timid community fish, slow-moving species or fish that require soft, acidic water. They can become highly territorial when breeding, and should not be mixed with closely related or similarly shaped lamprologine cichlids in a small aquarium.

How can Fairy Cichlids be encouraged to breed?

Fairy Cichlids are cave-spawning cichlids that form a bonded pair within a family colony. Provide a small cave or narrow rock crevice where the female can attach several dozen eggs to the roof or walls. The male fertilises them, and the parents guard the eggs and fry. Young fish from earlier spawns often remain nearby and help defend subsequent broods, creating a distinctive multi-generational colony. Feed newly free-swimming fry with baby brine shrimp or another suitably fine food.

How can male and female Fairy Cichlids be distinguished?

Males are generally larger than females and may develop slightly longer extensions on the dorsal, anal and caudal fins. Females are typically shorter-bodied and less finely elongated, although sexing young Fairy Cichlids visually can be difficult.
