What are Everglades Pygmy Sunfish like?

The Everglades Pygmy Sunfish is one of the smallest members of the sunfish group, with a compact body, rounded fins and an understated but attractive appearance. Males are usually dark brown to nearly black when displaying, often showing iridescent blue-green flecks and pale or bluish edging on the fins. Females are generally paler, with mottled brown and golden colouring that provides excellent camouflage.

These miniature fish are peaceful but not completely passive. Males defend small territories, especially when courting, and display to one another with extended fins and intensified colour. Their interactions are generally brief and rarely cause serious injury in a well-structured aquarium with plenty of visual barriers.

In the wild, they inhabit quiet, heavily vegetated waters where tannins, leaf litter and submerged stems create a complex maze of cover. They tend to hover discreetly among plants rather than swim constantly in open water, and their subtle behaviour is most rewarding when observed in a calm, mature aquarium.

Although they are sunfish, Everglades Pygmy Sunfish are very different from the large predatory sunfish familiar from ponds and lakes. Their small size, unusual breeding behaviour and preference for secluded, plant-rich habitats have made them a sought-after species among keepers of native and specialist nano aquariums.

Where do Everglades Pygmy Sunfish originate?

Everglades Pygmy Sunfish are native to the southeastern United States, particularly the freshwater marshes, swamps, ponds and slow-moving waterways of Florida, including the Everglades region. Their wider range extends through parts of the southeastern coastal plain, including areas of Georgia and Alabama.

What water temperature suits Everglades Pygmy Sunfish?

Celsius: 2024 °C
Fahrenheit: 6875 °F

Which pH range is best for Everglades Pygmy Sunfish?

Ideal pH: 6.57.5

How many Everglades Pygmy Sunfish should live together?

Keep at least 6 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

How should an Everglades Pygmy Sunfish aquarium be set up?

A group should be given at least 40 litres, with a footprint around 60 x 30 cm or larger being more useful than a tall aquarium. Use gentle filtration and subdued flow, as these fish come from calm, plant-filled waters. A soft sand or fine gravel substrate, driftwood, dried leaves, dense fine-leaved plants, moss and floating vegetation provide the cover and broken sightlines they need. Slightly tinted, mature water and shaded areas help them feel secure, while open patches allow males to establish small territories.

How large do Everglades Pygmy Sunfish become?

Males reach approximately 3.5 cm (1.4 inches), while females are usually slightly larger and may reach around 4 cm (1.6 inches).

What should Everglades Pygmy Sunfish eat?

Everglades Pygmy Sunfish are small micropredators that naturally feed on tiny aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, crustaceans and other minute prey. Offer a varied diet of live or frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, grindal worms and suitably small mosquito larvae. Many individuals are reluctant to accept dry foods, although some gradually learn to take high-quality powdered or micro-pellet foods. Several small feedings are preferable to one large meal, and uneaten food should be removed promptly.

Which fish make good tankmates for Everglades Pygmy Sunfish?

The safest community is a species-focused aquarium containing a small group of Everglades Pygmy Sunfish. They may also be kept with other very small, peaceful fish that prefer quiet, soft water, such as small pencilfish or carefully chosen diminutive native species, provided competition for food is limited. Avoid large fish, active feeders, fin-nippers and boisterous community species, all of which can intimidate them or consume them. Shrimp fry and very small juvenile fish may also be eaten.

How can Everglades Pygmy Sunfish be bred successfully?

Everglades Pygmy Sunfish can breed readily in a mature, densely planted aquarium. Males establish small territories and court females among fine-leaved plants, moss or spawning mops, where eggs are scattered and fertilised. The male may guard the area for a short time. Remove adults or raise the tiny fry separately if you want good survival, as the young are extremely small and may be eaten by their parents. Newly free-swimming fry require infusoria or another appropriately tiny first food before progressing to baby brine shrimp or similarly sized foods.

How can male and female Everglades Pygmy Sunfish be distinguished?

Males are typically darker and more vividly marked, developing blue-green iridescence and stronger fin colour during courtship or territorial displays. Females are usually larger-bodied and paler, with a rounder abdomen and more subdued brown or golden patterning.
