Elegant Cory Care Guide - Aquarium Setup, Diet & Breeding

The Elegant Cory is a small, attractively marked bottom-dwelling catfish with the familiar armoured body and short barbels of the Corydoras group. Its pale silvery to warm beige base colour is overlaid with darker markings across the back and flanks, while the fins may show subtle patterning that becomes more pronounced when the fish is settled and displaying well.

This species is peaceful, alert and sociable. Elegant Corys spend much of their time exploring the bottom with their barbels, occasionally rushing to the surface to gulp air using their specialised intestinal breathing ability. They are most engaging when kept in a group, where they rest together, forage side by side and move confidently through the aquarium.

In nature, they are associated with the shallow, calmer parts of Amazonian waterways. Leaf litter, submerged roots and shaded banks provide cover, while the soft bottom allows them to search for tiny worms, crustaceans and other edible organisms without damaging their delicate barbels.

Like other Corydoras, Elegant Corys are not scavengers that can live on leftovers alone. They are active little foragers with individual personalities, and their armoured appearance makes them a popular choice for peaceful South American community aquariums.

Corydoras elegans is native to the western and upper Amazon drainage in South America, with records from Peru and adjoining parts of Brazil. It inhabits slow-moving forest streams, shallow tributaries and quieter margins with soft, sediment-rich bottoms.

A group of Elegant Corys should have at least a 60-litre aquarium, ideally measuring around 60 cm long by 30 cm wide or larger so they have a useful area of bottom to explore. Use smooth fine sand or another rounded, non-abrasive substrate to protect their barbels, with driftwood, leaf litter, broad-leaved plants and shaded retreats creating cover. Leave open foraging areas at the front, provide gentle circulation with good oxygenation, and use a secure lid because Corydoras may make sudden trips to the surface.

Up to about 5 cm (2 inches) in total length. Females are usually larger and more heavily built, reaching close to 5 cm, while males commonly remain around 4 cm (1.6 inches).

Offer a varied diet of sinking catfish pellets, quality wafers and small sinking granules, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp and blackworms. Their barbels are used to locate food, but they should not be expected to survive on scraps left by midwater fish. Feed enough for the whole group to forage, while removing uneaten food before it decomposes.

Elegant Corys suit peaceful community aquariums and can be kept with small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, peaceful danios, small livebearers and other gentle South American species. They also mix well with other similarly sized Corydoras when sufficient bottom space is available. Avoid large, predatory or boisterous fish, fin-nippers and aggressive cichlids, as these may injure or intimidate them. They should not be housed with species that compete intensely for food on the substrate.

Elegant Corys are egg-scattering, open-substrate spawners. Condition a group with varied, protein-rich foods, then encourage spawning with a series of cooler, well-oxygenated water changes. The female carries fertilised eggs between her pelvic fins and places them on aquarium glass, plant leaves or other smooth surfaces. Adults may eat the eggs, so move the eggs or breeding fish to a separate container; the fry can be raised on infusoria or very finely powdered food before progressing to baby brine shrimp.

Females are generally broader through the body, especially when carrying eggs, and are slightly larger overall. Males are slimmer and often a little shorter, although the difference can be difficult to judge in young or poorly conditioned fish.
