What are Electric Yellow Cichlids like?

The Electric Yellow Cichlid is one of the most recognisable African mbuna, celebrated for its vivid lemon-yellow body and contrasting black edging on the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins. The clean, bright colouration makes it a striking feature fish in a Malawi cichlid aquarium, although wild and selectively bred fish may vary slightly in intensity.

Labidochromis caeruleus is a relatively mild-mannered mbuna, but it remains an active, territorial cichlid with a strong personality. Individuals explore rockwork, defend small territories and establish a social hierarchy, with males typically becoming more assertive when breeding.

In Lake Malawi, these cichlids live among rocky habitats where they pick small invertebrates and organisms from the surface of rocks. Their relatively slender shape and pointed mouth are well suited to browsing across crevices and grazing areas rather than excavating extensively like some larger Malawi cichlids.

Although often sold as a beginner-friendly African cichlid, the Electric Yellow still has the bold behaviour and specialised water requirements associated with the mbuna group. It is generally less aggressive than many related species, which has helped make it one of the most popular Malawi cichlids in the hobby.

Where do Electric Yellow Cichlids originate?

Electric Yellow Cichlids come from Lake Malawi in East Africa, particularly the rocky northwestern and central parts of the lake. Wild populations are associated with shallow rocky shorelines and clear, alkaline freshwater.

What water temperature suits Electric Yellow Cichlids?

Celsius: 2428 °C
Fahrenheit: 7582 °F

Which pH range is best for Electric Yellow Cichlids?

Ideal pH: 7.58.5

How many Electric Yellow Cichlids should live together?

Keep at least 4 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

How should an Electric Yellow Cichlid aquarium be set up?

A group should be housed in an aquarium of at least 200 litres, with a footprint around 120 cm long by 40 cm deep or larger; extra volume is valuable when keeping several mbuna species. Build a network of sturdy rocks and caves with open swimming space, securing the structure safely and placing rocks on the tank base before adding substrate. Fine sand or smooth, pale gravel suits their natural setting and allows natural browsing and occasional digging. Strong filtration, good oxygenation and stable, alkaline water are important, while hardy plants such as Anubias can be used if desired, though plants may be uprooted or nibbled.

How large do Electric Yellow Cichlids become?

Males reach up to about 10 cm (4 inches) in length, while females are usually slightly smaller at around 8 cm (3.2 inches).

What should Electric Yellow Cichlids eat?

Electric Yellow Cichlids are primarily aufwuchs grazers, feeding on algae and the tiny organisms living among it on rock surfaces. Offer a varied, largely vegetable-based diet built around quality spirulina or herbivore pellets and flakes, supplemented with blanched vegetables such as spinach, courgette or shelled peas. Small amounts of brine shrimp or other protein-rich foods may be given occasionally, but frequent heavy meaty foods can contribute to digestive problems and Malawi bloat.

Which tankmates work well with Electric Yellow Cichlids?

Suitable companions include other similarly sized, robust Lake Malawi mbuna such as Rusty Cichlids, Acei Cichlids, Saulosi and carefully selected Pseudotropheus species. Tankmates should have comparable alkaline-water needs and enough confidence to cope with territorial behaviour. Avoid mixing them with delicate community fish, slow-moving species, African river fish or peaceful soft-water species. Other strongly yellow cichlids, and fish with very similar blue-and-yellow patterns, can provoke confusion and aggression, while larger or much more aggressive mbuna may intimidate them.

How can Electric Yellow Cichlids be bred successfully?

Electric Yellow Cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders and are readily bred in the aquarium. Provide a group with several females per male, along with rockwork and sheltered areas where courtship can take place. After spawning, the female collects the eggs in her mouth and fertilises them by picking up sperm released by the male. She carries the brood for around three weeks, usually eating little or nothing during this time, before releasing free-swimming fry. Newly released young can be raised on fine-quality crushed flakes, baby brine shrimp and other appropriately sized foods.

How can male and female Electric Yellow Cichlids be distinguished?

Males are generally larger and may develop stronger black edging on the fins, a more intense yellow colour and clearer egg spots on the anal fin. Females are usually smaller and less strongly marked, although colour and egg-spot development can vary between individuals and strains.
