What are Demasoni like as aquarium fish?

Demasoni are small but striking mbuna, recognised for their vivid alternating bands of deep blue and near-black across the body. The bars continue through the fins, creating a bold pattern that makes this diminutive cichlid especially popular in Malawi aquariums.

Where do Demasoni originate?

Demasoni are endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa, where they are associated with rocky shoreline habitats around Pombo Rocks, near the Tanzanian side of the lake. They belong to the mbuna group of rock-dwelling Malawi cichlids.

What water temperature suits Demasoni best?

Celsius: 2428 °C
Fahrenheit: 7682 °F

Which pH range is right for Demasoni?

Ideal pH: 7.88.5

How many Demasoni should live together?

Keep at least 12 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

What aquarium setup do Demasoni need?

A group of Demasoni needs at least 200 litres, with a footprint of roughly 120 cm by 40 cm or larger preferred so territories can be established. Use a sandy or fine-grained substrate and build abundant caves, crevices and visual barriers from aquarium-safe rock, securing the structure firmly. Strong filtration, good oxygenation and stable, alkaline water are important, while open areas should remain available for grazing and swimming.

How large do Demasoni grow?

Up to about 8 cm (3.1 inches), with males sometimes reaching approximately 9 cm (3.5 inches); females are usually slightly smaller.

What should Demasoni eat?

In nature, Demasoni graze aufwuchs from rocks, consuming algae and the small organisms living within it. Feed a mainly vegetable-based diet built around quality spirulina or algae wafers, herbivore pellets and blanched vegetables such as spinach or courgette. Small supplementary portions of suitable frozen or live foods can be offered occasionally, but rich, meat-heavy diets should be avoided because they may contribute to digestive problems.

Which fish make good Demasoni tankmates?

Demasoni are best kept in a carefully planned Lake Malawi mbuna community with robust, similarly sized species such as Pseudotropheus saulosi, yellow labidochromis and other appropriately chosen mbuna. Avoid peaceful community fish, slow-moving species and similarly patterned blue-and-black cichlids, as Demasoni can be intensely territorial and aggressive, particularly toward their own kind and close relatives.

How can Demasoni be bred successfully?

Demasoni are maternal mouthbrooders and can breed readily in a mature aquarium. The male courts a receptive female over a flat rock or another suitable surface, after which she collects the fertilised eggs in her mouth. She carries the brood for around three weeks, usually releasing fully formed fry that can be offered finely powdered foods and newly hatched brine shrimp. Keeping several females with a male helps spread breeding attention, although females may still be harassed by persistent males.

How can male and female Demasoni be distinguished?

Demasoni show little obvious sexual dimorphism, and males and females share the same blue-and-black barred pattern. Mature males may be somewhat larger, more robust and more intensely coloured, while males often display more prominent egg spots on the anal fin, but reliable sexing can be difficult by appearance alone.
