Delphax Cory Care Guide - Aquarium Setup, Diet & Breeding
What are Delphax Corydoras like?
Delphax Corydoras is a small, armoured catfish with the familiar rounded body, downturned mouth and pairs of delicate barbels that help it investigate the bottom. Its silvery to pale tan body is marked with dark reticulated lines and blotches, while a darker mask-like pattern around the eyes and head gives the species an especially distinctive appearance. The dorsal fin and body markings can vary subtly between individuals.
Where are Delphax Corydoras found in the wild?
Delphax Corydoras originates from Colombia in South America, particularly tributaries associated with the upper Río Meta and the wider Orinoco drainage. It inhabits shallow, slow-moving freshwater environments with sandy or fine-gravel bottoms and submerged vegetation.
What water temperature suits Delphax Corydoras?
Which pH range keeps Delphax Corys comfortable?
How large should a group of Delphax Corys be?
Keep at least 6 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.
How should a Delphax Corydoras aquarium be set up?
A group of Delphax Corydoras should have at least 60 litres, with a floor area of roughly 60 by 30 cm or larger so they can forage naturally. Use soft sand or very smooth fine gravel to protect the sensitive barbels, along with open areas for searching and driftwood, rounded stones and plants for cover. Gentle water movement, shaded areas and well-maintained, oxygenated water help recreate the species’ stream and tributary habitat.
How large do Delphax Corydoras grow?
Males usually reach around 4.5 cm (1.8 inches), while females are larger and may grow to approximately 5.5 cm (2.2 inches).
What should Delphax Corydoras eat?
This omnivorous bottom feeder accepts sinking catfish pellets, granules and wafers, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, daphnia, mosquito larvae and brine shrimp. A varied diet supports condition and spawning, and food should reach the substrate rather than relying on leftovers from midwater fish. Occasional blanched vegetables may also be accepted, although animal and prepared foods should form the main part of the diet.
Which fish make good companions for Delphax Corydoras?
Delphax Corydoras is peaceful and works well with other calm community fish, including small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, peaceful livebearers, dwarf cichlids and other appropriately sized Corydoras. It should not be housed with large, predatory or persistently aggressive fish, nor with boisterous species that monopolise food or harass bottom dwellers. Keep it away from tankmates likely to swallow its barbels or compete aggressively for the substrate.
How can you encourage Delphax Corydoras to spawn?
Delphax Corys are egg scatterers that can be encouraged to spawn with excellent water quality, generous feeding and a partial water change with slightly cooler water. The female carries a few adhesive eggs between her pelvic fins while a male fertilises them, after which the eggs are placed on plant leaves, aquarium glass or other smooth surfaces. Remove the adults or transfer the eggs to a separate, gently filtered hatching tank, as the eggs and fry may be eaten. The eggs usually hatch in around three to five days, and the tiny fry can be started on infusoria or another suitably fine first food before moving on to baby brine shrimp.
How can male and female Delphax Corydoras be distinguished?
Females are typically broader-bodied and noticeably larger than males, especially when viewed from above. Males are generally slimmer and slightly shorter, with no dramatic difference in colouration.
