Brown Dot Pleco L006 Care Guide - Aquarium Setup, Diet & Breeding

The Brown Dot Pleco, also known as L006, is a compact armoured catfish with a handsome pattern of dark brown spots and markings over a lighter tan, cream or golden-brown body. Its broad head, sucker-shaped mouth and powerful pectoral and dorsal fins give it the familiar appearance of a specialised river-dwelling pleco.

Peckoltia oligospila is native to southeastern Brazil, particularly the Rio Paraíba do Sul basin. It comes from South America, where it inhabits warm, flowing freshwater environments with rocky structure and submerged wood.

A single adult Brown Dot Pleco should have at least 120 litres, with a footprint of around 100 × 40 cm or larger; extra floor space is important if keeping more than one. Use smooth sand or fine rounded gravel, sturdy rocks, caves and pieces of driftwood to create retreats and territorial boundaries. Strong filtration, good oxygenation and regular water movement suit its riverine nature, while plants can be included if they are securely rooted or attached to hardscape.

Up to about 15 cm (6 in) in total length. Males are often slightly larger and more heavily built than females.

This omnivorous pleco should receive a varied diet of quality sinking wafers and pellets, algae-based foods, blanched vegetables and occasional meaty foods such as frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp or insect-based foods. Driftwood can be useful as part of a natural grazing environment, but it should not be relied upon as the sole food source. Feed after lights out or when the aquarium is quiet so this mostly nocturnal fish gets its share.

Brown Dot Plecos are generally peaceful with similarly sized, non-aggressive community fish such as tetras, rasboras, peaceful barbs, dwarf cichlids, gouramis and other calm South American species. They may become territorial toward other plecos or similarly shaped bottom-dwellers, especially in confined spaces, so multiple specimens need separate caves and ample territory. They should not be housed with boisterous, fin-nipping or highly aggressive fish.

Brown Dot Plecos are cave spawners that can be bred when mature males and females are provided with several snug, smooth-sided caves. The female deposits a clutch inside a cave, after which the male guards and fans the eggs until they hatch. Fry can be raised on small sinking foods, softened vegetables and other suitably sized nutritious foods once they become free-swimming.

Mature males are usually broader-headed and develop more noticeable bristles or odontodes, particularly around the cheeks and along the body. Females tend to have a rounder abdomen and a smoother, less bristly appearance, especially when viewed from above.
