Blue Mickey Mouse Platies are a colourful cultivated variety of the southern platyfish, recognised for their blue-toned body and the distinctive dark Mickey Mouse-shaped marking near the base of the tail. Colour intensity can vary between individuals, and some fish show additional red, orange or darker shading depending on the strain.

The Blue Mickey Mouse Platy is a selectively bred colour and pattern form of Xiphophorus maculatus, a species native to freshwater habitats in eastern Mexico and parts of Central America. The aquarium strain itself does not occur naturally in the wild.

A minimum aquarium of 60 litres is suitable for a small group, with a footprint of around 60 by 30 cm or larger preferred. Use open swimming space alongside hardy live plants, some fine-leaved cover for young fish, and smooth wood or rock if desired. A fine gravel or sand substrate works well, with efficient filtration and a secure lid because platies can leap when startled.

Up to 6 cm (2.4 in) in total length. Females are usually the larger sex, commonly reaching around 5–6 cm (2.0–2.4 in), while males are often about 3.5–5 cm (1.4–2.0 in).

Blue Mickey Mouse Platies are omnivores that benefit from a varied diet. Offer a quality tropical flake or small pellet as the staple, supplemented with spirulina-based foods and occasional frozen or live treats such as daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm. Regular vegetable matter supports their natural tendency to graze on algae and other plant material.

These peaceful, active livebearers suit community aquariums with other calm fish of a similar size. Good companions include other platies, mollies, guppies, swordtails, peaceful tetras, rasboras, Corydoras and small, non-aggressive catfish. Avoid large or predatory fish, fin-nippers and aggressive cichlids; very slow-moving species may also find their constant activity unsuitable.

Blue Mickey Mouse Platies are easy, prolific livebearers. Keep one male with two or more females to reduce persistent courtship, and provide dense plants or spawning mops where fry can shelter. Females give birth to fully formed free-swimming young after roughly four weeks, although the exact gestation period varies with temperature and conditions. Adults may eat the fry, so separate the young or use a heavily planted nursery area if raising them is the goal.

Females are generally larger and deeper-bodied, particularly when carrying developing young. Males are smaller and slimmer, and have a gonopodium, a modified anal fin used for reproduction; females retain a normal fan-shaped anal fin.
