What are Asian clams like?

The Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea, is a small freshwater bivalve with a rounded, triangular shell. Its shell is usually yellow-brown, olive or tan, often marked with darker concentric rings and fine ridges that give it a glossy, patterned appearance. The two shell halves are hinged together and protect the soft body inside.

Rather than swimming through the aquarium, an Asian clam spends most of its time partly buried in sand or fine gravel. It extends a pair of siphons into the water column, drawing water in for respiration and feeding before filtering it back out. It may occasionally move across the substrate using its muscular foot.

In nature, these clams inhabit rivers, streams, lakes and canals, where they are commonly found in sandy or silty areas with a steady current. They tolerate a broad range of conditions and can survive in both still and flowing freshwater, helping explain their success as an introduced species.

Asian clams are often sold or collected as aquarium “clean-up crew” animals, but they are not algae-eaters in the usual sense. Their filter-feeding lifestyle makes them dependent on microscopic suspended food, and many specimens gradually starve in very clean aquariums. Their ability to reproduce rapidly also makes responsible ownership especially important.

Where do Asian clams naturally occur?

Asian clams are native to freshwater habitats in eastern and southeastern Asia, including parts of China, Korea, Japan, the Philippines and surrounding regions. They have since spread widely beyond their native range and are considered invasive in many countries, including the United States and parts of Europe.

What water temperature suits Asian clams?

Celsius: 2028 °C
Fahrenheit: 6882 °F

Which pH range is best for Asian clams?

Ideal pH: 6.58.0

How many Asian clams should live together?

Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.

What aquarium setup do Asian clams need?

A single Asian clam should be kept in an established freshwater aquarium of at least 40 litres, with a footprint of roughly 60 x 30 cm or larger so it has adequate bottom area and stable water conditions. Use a soft sand or fine rounded-gravel substrate deep enough for partial burial, along with moderate circulation, good oxygenation and stable filtration. Smooth stones, driftwood and hardy plants can provide natural structure, but the tank should retain some suspended microscopic food rather than being excessively sterile. Avoid copper-based medications, sudden changes in hardness or pH, and placing the clam where it can be trapped against a filter intake.

How large can Asian clams become?

Up to about 5 cm (2 in) across, although aquarium specimens are often smaller. There is no dependable sex-based size difference because this species is generally hermaphroditic.

What do Asian clams eat?

Asian clams are suspension-feeding filter feeders that consume microscopic algae, bacteria, organic particles and other fine plankton suspended in the water. They do not thrive on ordinary algae wafers or leftover fish food alone. A mature aquarium with naturally occurring microorganisms and occasional carefully measured liquid invertebrate or phytoplankton foods is more suitable, but overfeeding can quickly degrade water quality. Their feeding needs are difficult to meet in small or very clean tanks, so they are not an easy beginner invertebrate.

Which tankmates are safe with Asian clams?

Asian clams are peaceful and can live with other non-aggressive freshwater invertebrates and calm community fish that will not disturb or consume them. Suitable tankmates may include small rasboras, tetras, danios, livebearers, peaceful gouramis, adult shrimp and some small snails. Avoid puffers, loaches, large cichlids, crayfish, crabs and other animals that crush, pry open or eat molluscs; many fish may also consume newly released juveniles. Never transfer aquarium specimens or their water into ponds, streams or other natural waterways because Corbicula fluminea is invasive in many regions.

How do Asian clams reproduce in aquariums?

Asian clams are simultaneous hermaphrodites and can reproduce without a separate male and female. They brood developing larvae within the gills before releasing them into the water, where the tiny juveniles settle into the substrate. In aquaria, successful breeding is most likely in mature, well-established systems with abundant suspended microscopic food, although uncontrolled reproduction can lead to a large population and is one reason this species should not be released into natural waterways.

Can you tell male and female Asian clams apart?

Asian clams do not show reliable external sexual dimorphism. Individuals are usually simultaneous hermaphrodites, so males and females cannot be distinguished by shell colour, shape or size.
